About Us

Principal’s Message

WELCOME TO ST MARY’S SCHOOL

At St Mary’s, we pride ourselves on being a welcoming and inclusive, faith-filled learning community. We understand the immense trust each parent places in us when selecting a school for their child, and we believe that the best way to make that important decision is to visit our school and see it in action.

We are committed to developing the whole child—socially, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually—within a supportive Catholic learning environment. We hold strong partnerships with students, staff, parents, and the wider community, all of which are highly valued. Respectful relationships flourish as we live out our school motto, “Love one another,” and we encourage everyone to follow the Gospel Values and walk in Jesus’s footsteps.

Our school is a place of learning and discovery, where students are encouraged to cultivate the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for lifelong learning. We uphold contemporary learning practices based on the belief that all students can achieve and take responsibility for their own learning in a nurturing environment, gaining personal benefit through challenges and successes.

We encourage you to reach out with any inquiries—whether by phone or email. We’re more than happy to arrange individual tours for parents and their children, so you can experience our vibrant community firsthand. Come and visit us at St Mary’s; we look forward to meeting you and assure you that you are most welcome!

For inquiries, please email us at principal@smalexandra.catholic.edu.au or call us at 5772 1500 to speak with the principal or to book an appointment.

We invite you to explore our website for an overview of what St Mary’s has to offer, and we warmly welcome your interest in our school. We look forward to inviting you for a tour to discover even more about our wonderful community.

Warm regards,

Trish Etcell

School Profile

OUR VISION

At St Mary’s school we encourage an inclusive, learning community that values safety, love and faith.”

St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Alexandra, offers the richness of Catholic Education and tradition to the growing child in an environment where its example is the centre of all learning.

We hope that members of our St. Mary’s School Community experience and promote the gospel values of love, empathy, trust, respect, honesty and fairness. Our aim is to develop the whole child spiritually, socially, emotionally, physically and intellectually. Whilst Religious Education lessons are held throughout the week, the person of Jesus and gospel values – fairness, honesty, care and compassion – are promoted and modelled across all aspects of school life.

At St. Mary’s, our principles for learning design are:

  • learning through meaningful partnerships, encompassing the local and wider communities
  • learning is ongoing, personalised, innovative and reflective; fiving all stakeholders voice and choice
  • we value a contemporary learning environment that is rich and engaging, personalised, safe and inclusive
  • wellbeing is integral to learning and student motivation and success
  • assessment is pivotal in the journey of learning and is evidence based, driven by data and a strong knowledge of pedagogy to support student outcomes

HISTORY OF ST. MARY’S CATHOLIC SCHOOL

It was in 1953 that the older part of our present school was completed and blessed by Archbishop Simonds. Sisters Leo, Clement and Bernadette opened the school with an enrolment of 85 children. Eventually, school numbers climbed to 150 from Prep to Form 4. After Form 1 – 4 were discontinued, numbers were steady for awhile until 1981, when the numbers were 69. Since then, there has been a steady increase, with enrolments now between 130 to 160 most years. At the commencement of 2023 our enrolment was 142.

As we develop and grow, our goals remain the same. St. Mary’s Catholic School:

  • will integrate Christian faith and life
  • will be a school where everyone is passionate and motivated about learning
  • will be a school where students feel valued and safe
  • will work together as an effective team for the benefit of the whole school community
  • will work together as a community in positive partnership

These goals can only be achieved with the support and encouragement of the whole community – the parents, children, teachers, the Parents’ Auxiliary, the School Advisory Board, the Catholic Church and the community of Alexandra.
